Smoke alarms: the most important device in your home

Did you know that there are around 11,000 house fires recorded in Australia every year?

According to Fire & Rescue NSW, it’s a minimum requirement that you have at least one smoke alarm installed per floor of your home. However, the NSW Fire Brigade recommend that you also install them outside all sleeping areas and inside all bedrooms.

They may only be small, but that little disc on the ceiling could well save your life one day! They are designed not only to detect a fire, but also ensure that they alert everyone in your home before the fire takes hold, so that you and your family can make a safe escape and call emergency services.

At Electrician To The Rescue we understand how important your family and home are! Which is why we can’t recommend smoke alarm installation and maintenance highly enough.

With over 35 years of trusted experience, you can be rest assured that your families well being is in safe hands when it comes to installing, regular maintenance, and repairs of all smoke alarms.

Interlinked Smoke Alarms

Imagine you are fast asleep. Without your knowing, smoke starts filling up your house. A fire - in the middle of the night, with no warning! Would you rather depend on a single alarm to alert you, or several interconnected smoke alarms ringing loudly and waking you up?

Many families have lost loved ones to house fires. Human life is fragile and therefore it is vital to be well prepared for the risk of a house fire. One way to mitigate the risk of losing your loved ones in a house fire is by using smoke alarms!

At Electrician To The Rescue we highly value the safety of our clientele and have done so for the past 35 years. To minimise risk to your family and property we recommend not only having one single smoke alarm, but investing in an interlinked solution.

Don't delay updating your smoke alarms. If you forget, the consequences could be severe! Fire safety is certainly not something you can just sweep under the rug and forget about.

Don't risk it. Keep your family safe. Upgrade your smoke alarms today using the experts!

How can smoke alarms go wrong?

The statistics on home fire deaths and smoke alarms, demonstrate a strong relationship between working, reliable alarms and a reduction in injuries and fatalities.

  • On average, 4000 Australians are hospitalised for fire related injuries every year.
  • Only 12% of Australians know that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years.
  • In 23% of home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound.

Don't play the numbers game. If you aren't relying on a modern, reliable, interlinked smoke alarm system, you're not fully protected!

Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years for optimal efficiency and effectiveness. If you haven’t had yours checked in 10 years, you and your family could be at risk!

Upgrading your smoke alarm every ten years is a step in the right direction. Another great habit to get into is simply checking them a couple of times a year.  A great way to remember to check your smoke alarms, is to do it when you change your clocks for daylight savings!

What's the difference between ionisation and photoelectic smoke alarms? And which is best?

There are two main types of smoke alarms that detect residential fires in different ways:

Ionisation Smoke Alarms

This type of smoke alarm can effectively “smell” the smoke from a fire, which makes them better at detecting fast flaming fires, however, they may be slower to detect slow burning fires.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

This type of smoke alarm can “see” smoke before it bursts into flames. This makes them more effective detectors of slow burning or smouldering fires, as they can detect smoke from a house fire earlier than Ionisation smoke detectors. If an electrical fire has started in the home (usually caused by appliances or overloaded circuits) the extra minutes provided by a smoke alarm can prove to be lifesaving, as at this stage of the fire, air is often still breathable, and visibility may not yet be affected.

Smoke alarms save lives, so keep you and your family safe. Our local Sydney electricians can install a smoke alarm in a flash and can provide expert advice about smoke alarm safety!
