Smoke Alarm Electrician
Your smoke alarm – a life saver in your home
They’re small and easy to ignore, but when it comes to home safety, they could literally save your life. Smoke alarms are one of the most important pieces of equipment in your any home, but in order to keep you and your family safe, they should be properly looked after and tested.
Every smoke alarm electrician knows how important smoke alarms are. We want to keep you safe, so we’ve put together a few simple tips to help you carry out the all important regular maintenance that your smoke detector needs.
It may sound obvious, but with a busy family and work life, remembering to check your smoke alarm can be tricky.
Fire & Rescue NSW recommends: all of your smoke alarms should be tested at least every month to ensure that the battery and the alarm sounder are working, so try to get in the habit of setting aside a minute a month to do this.
Maintenance needs to be done every 6 months, so we recommend that you service your smoke alarm every time you change your clock for daylight savings, so that you don’t forget.
Every 6 months
You should clean your smoke alarm with a vacuum cleaner. This will remove any particles that will hinder its performance. If you’re using a 9V lead battery, you should consider changing it twice a year.
Once a year
If your smoke alarm has a removable alkaline battery, you should replace the battery once a year. If it uses a lithium battery it will not need replacing annually as the battery is inbuilt into the alarm and the entire unit will need replacing every ten years.
Get into a good habit now!
This year daylight savings ends on Sunday 6th April at 2:00AM so don’t forget to check your smoke alarms when you change your clocks. It takes just three minutes to lose your home and family to flames so don’t put it off, make sure your smoke alarm is tested regularly.
