Your Expert Guide To Vivid’s 5 Best Kept Secrets
Vivid Sydney 2016 starts this Saturday! Want an unforgettable experience? Looking for the inside track to make Vivid 2016 your most amazing one yet? Then read on – as the expert electrician Sydney trusts, we’ve got our finger on the pulse, and right now it’s racing with all the buzz around this year’s Vivid Sydney festival.
Artists, designers, speakers and musicians, both local and international, are coming together again for one of the world’s biggest and brightest festivals of colour and sound.
It’s inspired us to put together this useful list of the 5 best kept Vivid secrets – the spots that are off the beaten track, where you’re guaranteed an amazing spectacle.
Not only that, but we will give you handy hints on transport, food and drink to make your experience extra special!
The Galleries: Art With Class
We’ve always loved this great retail and dining district. But it’s really going to a whole new level with a collaboration between local and international video artists titled ‘Perspectives’. This amazing piece is fractured between the levels, walls and fragmented surfaces of the Galleries!
The Galleries will be Vivid’s first ever indoor installation piece, which makes it even more unmissable: we’ve seen preview shots, and it looks like something out of Total Recall – but ten thousand times prettier.
If video art isn’t your thing, you’re still in one of the best spots in town for a feed. The Arthouse Hotel is an absolutely gorgeous, intimate venue with a great range on the menu, and amazing cocktails! If you’re after a more family-focused meal, just below Kinokuniya is the Sushi Hotaru train-style restaurant.
Royal Botanical Gardens: A Walk On The Grass
The Royal Botanical Gardens is beautiful at the best of times. Filled with awesome Australian flora, you really can’t miss out on this venue! It’s been 200 years since the Gardens were planted, and from the harbour foreshore back there’s a series of awesome installations to celebrate the Gardens’ natural features.
A ‘Cathedral of Light’ is the main attraction, but you won’t want to miss any of the displays near the Botanical Gardens! With the display opening at 6pm, why not make a day of it?
After all, you’re only a short walk from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, with its amazing series of awesome talks throughout May and June on art, culture and the human experience. You can also catch up on the latest art-world info before having a look at some of the amazing collaborations in display in the Gardens. These talks are all free – but require bookings.
This is a great spot for the family, and the opening hours of 6-11pm, mean you’re not going to be breaking any bed-time rules if you make the Botanical Gardens the focus of the visit! And with so much to see here, why not make it the base for your Vivid experience?
Taronga: Something For The Cheeky Monkeys
It’s been 100 years since Taronga opened its gates to the public. To celebrate, the zoo is throwing a massive party – and we’re all invited! Vivid 2016 will feature Taronga zoo as a new precinct of art, design and lights, the likes of which haven’t been seen before.
This is a ticketed event only, and tickets can be purchased either online through the Taronga Zoo website, or at the gates themselves.
Children will go absolutely ape for the interactive lighting displays, soundscapes, and giant light sculptures of what Taronga calls 10 “Legacy” species. “Legacy” species are species of animals that Taronga Zoo is dedicated to protecting and conserving. Building a future for these critters in the wild takes patience and effort: support the awesome work of Taronga by checking out this great display!
Walsh Bay: The Hidden Wharves
A short walk from The Rocks, Walsh Bay is loaded with great surprises for the whole family. This year there’ll be even more of the awesome interactive exhibits we saw in 2015 – including the international collaboration ‘Wormhole Galaxy’! It’s like playing pinball with lights – and it’s a great show for the kids.
While you’re in the Bay don’t miss the amazing ‘Underwater Forest’. Avant garde artist ‘Mcdermott Baxter’ has used light to build a beautiful display directly on the water. Highlighting the existing industrial architecture of the wharves, it’s like walking over a seaweed forest – right in the middle of the city!
Or if that’s not your thing, you can always stop by the Lord Nelson Brewery for a great drink and some awesome food. With heaps of great local beer on tap and amazing Aussie wines, it’s the perfect spot for dinner and drinks with that special someone!
The Opera House: In Full Swing
Okay, this isn’t really a secret. But it’s an absolute must-see on your Vivid trip! The Opera House is a short walk from Circular Quay, where most of the action happens, and has a series of awesome music and cultural events, alongside amazing projections on the house itself.
There’s so much to choose from here: whether you’re into classical or rock, jazz or DJs, or even death metal – there’s something on the bill that will surprise you, engage you, and capture your imagination.
There’s even talks and lectures by leading thinkers in their field on pretty much every day of the festival. Events at the Opera House are ticketed: you’ll have to plan in advance and purchase your tickets, but it’s worth the price of admission.
The Opera House sits above one of the best dining and drinking districts in Sydney. Opera Bar is a classy spot for a cocktail, a glass of wine, or a local beer; and there’s a strip of famous restaurants which all serve high-end, fine-dining: a premium experience. Why not make a night of it? Catch a gig, grab a drink, and then go and enjoy the rest of what Vivid has to offer.
Some Handy Hints For A Great Vivid Experience
The 5 amazing spots above will keep you intrigued, surprised and absolutely stunned at the beauty and majesty of the artists’ creations. But you can’t have a fun time without having a safe time, so we’ve also put together a few tips on the admin side of Vivid:
Leave The Car At Home
There’s extra buses and trains to and from Vivid. The website advises that there will be massive road closures and no-car-zones, so don’t try to park in or near the city – catch public transport if at all possible. Remember, there may be track work on your train line during the festival – keep up to date with Transport NSW.
Keep A Close Eye On The Kids
Vivid will be crowded and busy, so it’s important you keep little ones with you! Vivid volunteers and organisers at visitor’s booths are handing out bracelets with space for you to write your contact details on them – should a child become lost, all the volunteers and security personnel have been trained as to best practice, and will get things straight ASAP.
Try Something Different!
This is really the most important bit. Go out on a limb – see a band you normally wouldn’t, go to a part of town you don’t usually see, eat something that’s a bit of a surprise – whatever it is, Vivid is about trying new things. It’s awesome to get a taste of everything Vivid has to offer, so just dive straight in, and see what comes to the surface!
Vivid 2016: The Best Yet?
We’ve had a sneaky peak at the line-up of awesome artists, musical maestros and talking heads who are dominating this year’s Vivid festival, and we’re confident to say it’s going to be the best yet. So eat, drink and be merry!
